SolydXK Linux Distribution

SolydXK info on Distrowatch.com here.

The LinuxMint Debian Edition drops the LMDE KDE and LMDE Xfce bundle. So, where else to find a Debian-testing-based distros that bundle with these desktop environtment, especially for Xfce where all the majority of debian-based with Xfce DE bundle is based on unstable aka SID.

Of course, for a user that has deeper knowledge about linux, it is easy to pick any distros and make any flavour to suit his/her taste and need. But for user that want a distribution with everything bundled, he is going to need to look somewhere else.

And here it is: SolydXK, a new distro that no other were unofficial LMDE KDE and LMDE Xfce where SolydX represent an Xfce desktop environtment and SolydK represent a KDE desktop environtment.

The official web of SolydXK described :

"SolydX and SolydK are Debian based distribution with the Xfce and KDE Desktop. SolydXK aims to be simple to use, providing an environtment that is both stable and secure."

"SolydXK is an open source alternative for small businesses, non-profit organizations and home users."

Schoelje, the man behind this great distro, decided to bring this new distribution since the LMDE KDE and Xfce were not going to become official.

Schoelje
“The unofficial LMDE KDE, like most new things, was born out of frustration. I loved LMDE but I did not like Mate or Cinnamon. It felt like trying to revive an abandoned technology. As if Frankenstein had gone digital, but needed practice on its stitching. I liked Mint KDE, but I missed LMDE's stability. There’s been many rumors that Clem [creator of Linux Mint] had intentions to create LMDE KDE, but that never happened.

So, I decided to create my own Boris Karloff : strong, stable and... beautiful. First, it was just a bunch of scripts and packages gathered from several Debian and Ubuntu repositories, but then I thought that there may be some people out there who are experiencing the same frustration of having no LMDE KDE, and that's when I decided to create the live DVD. Although, I, too, need some stitching practice, but I think the result has some merit.”

When Linux Mint dropped their LMDE Xfce edition, I started that one from scratch and “The unofficial LMDE Xfce” was born.

Both these editions were mainly created with the help of the community. Without them they simply wouldn’t exist. Especially with the Xfce edition where the community decided which software was to be included and which software not. So, these distributions are really community driven.

When it became clear that the unofficial editions were not going to become official I decided to take the next step and let these great distributions stand on their own two feet and the unofficials got their proper names: SolydX and SolydK.

SolydXK will not forget it’s roots. SolydXK and Linux Mint closely work together to make our distributions even better.

SolydXK does not need to be reinstalled each time an update or newer ".iso" is released. Updates are delivered in monthly packs through the update manager. The update manager sits in your system tray and signals you whenever an update is available. You can find detail description of the update pack process on SolydXK forum.

So, what are we waiting for? just grab the ".iso" from their download page and try these Solyd distros.
